One of Portland’s premiere natural events is celebrated in the documentary, On The Wing, by the city's own Real Earl Productions. This wonderful film will debut in a benefit for The Audubon Society of Portland.
The premiere evening will include an introduction from the filmmaker with a Q&A session immediately following. Proceeds from ticket sales support The Audubon Society of Portland's work in Swift Watching. Tickets include complimentary popcorn.
On The Wing tells the story of Vaux 's swifts that have taken up residence in the chimney of Northwest Portland’s Chapman Elementary School. Since the early 1990’s, the event has become a cult phenomenon in Portland, drawing hundreds and thousands of people nightly to watch the amazing display. On The Wing captures the community, energy and excitement of the entire Swifts phenomenon.
“The film showcases not just the birds, but also the people of Portland, who worked so hard to coexist with nature instead of smoking it out,” said Dan Viens of Real Earl Productions.
The film documents the birds’ 2007 residency. Interviews with school teachers, students, neighborhood residents, Swift Watchers and Audubon Society of Portland staff explain how the phenomenon came to be and how it has evolved into what it is today. Amazing footage of the birds, including shots from inside the chimney, give audiences an extraordinary, never-before-seen view of the Swifts.
On The Wing is Real Earl Productions’ first feature-length documentary. More information and a trailer for the film are available here.
Dan Viens is the creative force behind Real Earl. In 2006 he found himself living two blocks from the birds and knew this film had to be made. You have to experience this wonderful film!
