Join the Portland Audubon community by becoming a volunteer! We offer a range of volunteer opportunities that fit schedules and skill sets of all types.

Note: At this time, many of our volunteer opportunities are filled, but please complete a Volunteer Application so we can keep in touch with you. You’ll be notified about our next Volunteer Orientation and Training, as well as any available opportunities.

Why Volunteer?

Our volunteers consistently say their experiences at Portland Audubon are fun and rewarding, and that they know they are making a difference. Volunteers play a crucial role in all areas of our organization – they serve as receptionists, help plan and run events, monitor wildlife in the field, care for injured wild animals, lead tours of our sanctuaries and so much more.

Who Can Volunteer?

Community Volunteers
Age range: 10 years and older (14 and older for sanctuary work parties)

Community volunteer opportunities are designed for people who would like to give back to the community by participating in a one-day event. These opportunities often include sanctuary work parties, painting and renovations, and our Wild Arts Festival. Attendance at Volunteer Orientation and Training is not required. All volunteers between the ages of 10-16 must be accompanied by an adult volunteer at all times.

Special Event Volunteers
Age range: 10 years and older
Special Event Volunteers are those whose schedules don’t permit volunteering on a regular basis. They support Audubon by helping at special events like the Wild Arts Festival, Native Plant Sale and Swift Watch. General Volunteer Training is optional, but Volunteer Orientation is required. All volunteers between the ages of 10-16 must be accompanied by an adult volunteer at all times.

Youth Volunteers
Age range: 10-16 years
Youth Volunteers can volunteer when accompanied by an adult who is also volunteering. They can act as Audubon Docents during the spring and summer months and help with special events. If they are 14 years or older, they can also join sanctuary work parties. Attendance at Volunteer Orientation and Training is required.

Regular Volunteers
Age range: 17 years and older
Regular Volunteers are able to serve on a more regular schedule. You may volunteer 4 hours each week in the Nature Store, Wildlife Care Center or Receptionist area, among other programs. If a regular weekly shift doesn’t fit in your schedule, you can still be a “regular Audubon volunteer” by offering your time on a semi-routine basis. These valued volunteers help in the education department or with sanctuary work parties, conservation efforts, tabling, gardening, and more as their schedules allow.
