Take the Pledge to Go Lights Out!

LightsOut Take the Pledge

Lights Out programs help reduce the impacts of light pollution on birds, mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, plants, and humans. They also save energy and money, reduce our carbon emissions, and preserve our view of the night sky. Your participation helps make our region safer and healthier for wildlife and humans alike, and helps raise awareness about the growing impact that light pollution has on the world around us!

Pledge to reduce your unnecessary lighting and receive a free metal yard sign or a vinyl window cling in honor of your commitment. The sign shows your neighbors that you have taken the pledge to save energy, save birds and see stars! Click here to take the pledge.

Here’s what enrolling means:

1. Do an audit of your home lighting and follow best practices:

  • Turn off your outdoor lights when you’re not using them.
  • Make sure that your outside lights aim down and are well-shielded so that they don’t create light trespass or glare.
  • Install motion sensors on your outside lights so that they’re only on when needed.
  • When converting outdoor lights to LED, choose warm bulbs (3,000 Kelvins or under).
  • During migration seasons, draw your blinds or curtains to reduce light spill.

2. If the streetlight in front of your house shines light into your house, request a shield from the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

3. Email regional decision makers to let them know that you are enrolled in the Take the Pledge program, and that you support Portland Audubon’s LightsOut campaign to ensure that we’re protecting wildlife, safeguarding our own health, and preserving our access to the night sky!

4. Sign up for our LightsOut email list.

5. Hang your sign someplace prominent in your front yard or in a window that’s visible from the street!
