Backyard Habitat Certification Program

Western Tanager DB

Conservation of birds and other wildlife begins in the backyard. More than 200 species of birds pass through the metropolitan region each year. Many of these species are experiencing long-term population declines. You can help these birds by providing them with habitat in your backyard. On an increasingly developed landscape, these small pockets of habitat may be critical to their survival.

This fall Audubon will be teaming up with the Three Rivers Land Conservancy to create a Backyard Habitat Certification Program. Expert staff and volunteers will work with private property owners to restore their yards, removing invasive species, planting native vegetation and developing site specific strategies to attract birds and other wildlife. Our goal is to certify 1000 yards by 2011 as wildlife friendly.
