State of Oregon's Birds

Great Blue Heron 4 - Jim Cruce
Great Blue Heron - Jim Cruce

Oregon is an amazing place for birds! Nearly 400 bird species use Oregon for some part of their life cycle. Of these, more than 200 pass through the Portland Metropolitan Region each year. Our state ranks fifth in the nation for bird diversity. However, many of our native bird species are in trouble. Nearly 25 percent of species found in Oregon are suffering long term declines and 11 percent of the species found in Oregon are either already critically imperiled or likely to become critically imperiled in the near future. The trends in our state reflect similar trends nationwide.
