Help Fight Climate Change and Promote Social and Economic Equity in Portland

Audubon Society of Portland is proud to be working with other environmental and social justice organizations such as the Asian Pacific Network of Oregon (APANO), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Verde, 350PDX, Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club, Physicians for Social Responsibility and others to put the Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Initiative on the November 2018 Ballot. This initiative would place a 1% business license surcharge on retail corporations in Portland which make over $1 billion nationally and $500,000 in Portland on an annual basis. The funds raised from this surcharge would be used to promote implementation of the Portland Climate Action Plan in a manner that supports social, economic and environmental justice. This includes development of a diverse and well-trained  workforce and contractor pool in the field of energy efficiency and implementation of green energy and green infrastructure initiatives in Portland. The funding would be collected by the City of Portland and distribution would be guided by a stakeholder committee.

With the Portland Climate Action Community Benefits Initiative, our community can take additional proactive steps to fight climate change while addressing social and economic inequity by providing major new economic opportunities for low-income Portlanders, including women and communities of color. At a time when so many of us have to say NO far too often, this initiative is an opportunity for Portland to say YES in a big way to being a national model in responding to climate change and economic inequities by creating a Just Energy Transition. The coalition working on this initiative is currently seeking volunteers, financial support and endorsements. We have a tremendous amount of work between now and November to pass this important grassroots initiative. Please join us!
