At Westmoreland Park, the domestic ducks and geese will soon have new, safer homes

Early in the morning on Sept. 20, the Audubon Society will team up with three veterinarians and a pack of duck-lovers at Westmoreland Park in Southeast Portland.

There, at the edge of the pond in the middle of the park, they'll lure domestic ducks and geese into traps and later give them away to farmers and families.

Their work is part of the Portland parks bureau's larger effort to restore Crystal Springs Creek, which runs from Reed College through the pond at Westmoreland Park and into Johnson Creek.

The project aims to re-establish the natural flow of Crystal Springs Creek, add landscaping with native plants and move domestic ducks and geese to safer homes where they won't hurt each other and spread disease among themselves.
