Inside Out Flower, Duck's Foot
Vancouveria hexandra
General: Rhizomatous perennial, wihtou leafy aerial stems.
Leaves: All basal, 10-40 cm long, long-stalked, usually twice-divided into 3s; 9-15 leaflets heart-to egg-shaped, 3 lobed, sparsely hairy; stalks brownish-hairy at least near the base.
Flowers: White, made up of 6-9 outer bracts that soon fall off, 6 sepals and 6 petals that are a bit shorter than the sepals and have hooded, glandular so that the nodding flowers have the general aspect of a cyclamem or shootingstar; stamens finely purplish-glandular-hairy; flowers 10-30 on long, slender stalks in open panicles.
Ecology: Moist, shady forest, common from low to middle elevations.
