Woman Birding

If you prefer to head out into the natural world to bird in solitude, then participate in Birdathon as an individual. Enjoy the quiet as you listen for bird songs, spot the flutter of a wing amongst the leaves, and watch birds soar above.

By heading out on your own, you can plan your trip for whenever your schedule allows and tailor your Birdathon experience to your own interests. Here are a few things to consider as you begin to plan your trip:

  • Once you register you will be provided with fundraising and Birdathon resources from Mark Fitzsimons, our Birdathon Coordinator, to help you raise as much money as possible.
  • If you are looking for great birding areas in Oregon, check out our map of Important Birding Areas (IBAs). From the coast to Portland to Malheur to Klamath, Oregon is full of incredible sites to spot birds. Some of our favorites in the greater Portland area include Sauvie Island, Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, Tryon Creek State Natural Area, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Fernhill Wetlands, Smith and Bybee Wetlands, Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, and Tualatin Hills Nature Park. You can also get trip ideas by looking at the excursions planned by our Birdathon teams or by checking Oregon Birding Trails.
  • For those who want to stay close to home and take part in Birdathon, do a backyard bird count. Because birds are everywhere, we can count anywhere.
  • When posting images of your Birdathon experience on social media, use the hashtag #BirdathonPDX to help raise awareness and connect your efforts with other Birdathoners.
