Come enjoy the forest at fullness! We will use writing, practice a relaxed way of drawing and explore simple techniques with watercolor to record our impressions and experiences in the sanctuary.

Learn to see in a different way, and express in your unique style, in a journal format. In this class, we’ll practice ways of recording in our journals what charms the eye in nature.  No art experience needed! We will work inside and out, as we relax into the beauty of the place.
Our pages will develop uniquely and in wonderful ways as we observe the wonderful life around us in the Audubon Sanctuary, and work with different techniques like plant prints, handmade nature stamps, borders and other embellishments.

With two days of instruction per class, your skill and confidence levels will grow as your individual style emerges.

Jude is the author of A Pacific Northwest Nature Journal and has taught her techniques for Nature Journaling for over 30 years. “Jude is a wonderful, encouraging instructor who really helped me learn more about the subject.” – Amy Doyle, student.

Fee: $75 members / $95 non-members

Note: These are my suggestions of what works well, from years of experience. Take time to read through the list carefully, call me with questions, and then go to the art store! (However, you may just bring what you already have, if you wish.)

Remember: We walk around when we work outside, so plan to be mobile. Bring your gear in a bag you can comfortably carry, and dress for walking and the weather!

Please bring:

  • lunch and snacks
  • a water bottle (for painting and drinking)
  • a watch or phone to keep time
  • a lightweight, comfortable, easily portable chair or stool
    - Try Walgreens or a camping supply store.
  • tissues
  • plastic bag for wet materials
  • brushes
    - If you only want to bring one, I suggest a #8 or #10 round with a blend of natural and synthetic hairs.
  • 1-3 small yogurt-sized water containers (only 1 needed for outdoor classes)
  • washcloth-sized rag
    - Terrycloth works well.
  • permanent black pens
    - I suggest medium or fine Uniball Vision Elite, Pitt Pens, or Pigma-Microns.
    - You may additionally bring other colors, calligraphy pens, and water-soluble pens, but these are just for fun and not required.
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • kneaded eraser
  • watercolor paper journal and sketchbook
    - You may buy a readymade watercolor journal or bind your own.
    - For sketchbooks, I suggest Robert Bateman (8.5x11)
or Aquabee 808 Super Deluxe (9x12).
  • watercolors (a small travel palette)
    - You can bring your own or order a palette from me! (See Available for purchase section on the next page)
    - If you decide to get your own, make sure to buy good quality tube paints or the results may be frustrating.  See the list on the next page for color guidelines.
