Northeastern Spain in Fall

October 30 - November 8, 2018

See the iconic Lammergeier and Wallcreeper on this amazing fall journey to Northeastern Spain! We will be starting in Madrid, birding our way to Navarra province, spending some time in the steppes around Lleida, working the high elevation Pyrennees, heading out to the famous Ebro delta along the coast and ending in Barcelona, where we will be admiring Gaudi's famous architecture.

Target species in the steppes include Great and Little Bustard, Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Stone Curlew and several species of larks. In the high Pyrennees above tree line we will be looking for the amazing Lammergeier and Alpine Accentor. In Europe, the Lammergeier has its population stronghold in the Pyrennees, so the chances of seeing this odd vulture are high. Remarkably, the bird will stay above tree line in the winter as well.

Back down from the cold of the Pyrennes, we will be able to see large numbers of waterfowl, Greater Flamingo, Eurasian Spoonbill and several tern and shorebird species at the Ebro Delta, one of Europe's most important wetlands. We are also hoping to see Moustached Warbler, Bluethroat and the flashy Common Kingfisher.

All throughout the Spanish rockscape, we will have chances for Black Wheatear, Bonelli's Eagle, the superb Wallcreeper and Blue Rock Thrush. The Wallcreeper descends in the fall from its inaccessible breeding areas above tree line and will be relatively easy to find after they have arrived at their low to mid elevation wintering sites. This little bird with its flashy red velvet wings will be a real treat to watch! With luck we will also be seeing an Eagle Owl.
