The Gulf of California, AKA "The Sea of Cortez," is a world-renown biodiversity hotspot, especially famous for its array of fish, marine mammals and birds. Its waters teem with hundreds of species of both tropical and temperate fish, and more than ten species of whales can be found here, including Humpback, Sperm, and the awe-inspiring Blue Whale. To acknowledge this region’s special diversity, UNESCO has placed it on its World Heritage List. Cruising the Gulf of California in our own chartered vessel, we’ll explore the seas and desert islands north of La Paz, going ashore several of the islands to enjoy a bit of hiking, birding, and beachcombing. Birding highlights include the Magnificent Frigate Bird, Red-billed Tropic Bird, Royal & Elegant Terns, and the Blue-footed Booby, just to name a few. We’ll also have the chance to snorkel in the warm waters of the gulf, with the exciting possibility of encountering the massive, yet gentle, Whale Shark
