Cuban Trogon - Eric Scheuering

Experience the rich culture and regions of unspoiled nature on the largest island in the Caribbean… Cuba. We will travel throughout the western half of the island in search of many of the 28 endemics, including Cuban Tody, Cuban Pewee, Cuban Grassquit, Cuban Vireo, Cuban Oriole, and the national bird, the Cuban Trogon. We’ll visit the Zapata Swamp, one of the most important bird habitats in Cuba. The expansive Cienaga de Zapata National Park bordered by the famous Bay of Pigs is one of the gems of the Cuban park system and the largest protected wetland in the West Indies. This Everglades like ecosystem is home to the smallest bird in the world, the diminutive Bee Hummingbird, literally not much bigger than a bumblebee. Here, we hope to come across the Greater Flamingo, Fernandina’s Flicker, and Zapata Sparrow. Our last couple of nights will be spent in Havana, where we’ll experience an eclectic mix of architecture covered in tropical pastels that brighten the exterior of historic buildings while local music fills the streets to create the cheerful rhythm that enlivens the island.
