A birder's paradise in spring, May 11 - 18, 2013, with Dan van den Broek & Mike Skinner.

Elegant Trogon 200 - Scott Carpenter
Elegant Trogon - Scott Carpenter

Come along with Audubon on this trip to one of the birding capitals of the U.S.! We will explore the Sonoran Desert and the “Sky Islands” of southeastern Arizona. During the month of May, many birds are singing and nesting here, which will help in our search for several highly sought-after species. Our destinations will include Madera Canyon, Patagonia-Sonoita Creek, Ramsey Canyon and the San Pedro Riparian Conservation Area

While in the Sonoran Desert, we’ll find birds such as Verdin, Curve-billed Thrasher, Cactus Wren, and Gambels Quail. In the Madrean Pine-Oak Woodland of the mountains, we’ll search for Elegant Trogon, Arizona Woodpecker and Bridled Titmouse. The highest diversity of hummingbirds in the U.S. is in this corner of Arizona, and we have a chance to see up to 10 species. We hope to find  regional specialties such as Magnificent, Blue-throated, Broad-billed and perhaps a White-eared Hummingbird

In Madera Canyon, we’ll see the amicable Painted Redstart, and here is our best chance for the aptly named Elegant Trogon. Patagonia-Sonoita Creek is an oasis that attracts numerous species of birds and we’ll be on the lookout for a number of local specialties including Varied Bunting, Gray Hawk and Violet-crowned Hummingbird. Ramsey Canyon is famous for the many hummingbirds that come to the feeders, and the surrounding Pine-oak woodlands that host a variety of birds. The avifauna of southeastern Arizona is heavily influenced by areas south of the border, and for many species of birds this area is their northern limit. We will stay at comfortable accommodations all along the way, strategically located to provide access to these incredible places.
