Fishing reel

You feel a quick tug on the line...your eyes flit from the Great Blue Heron you’ve been watching to your rod. The tug turns into a pull and you know you are in a struggle with a creature from the water world: a fish is on your line! The struggle turns into something more of a dance as you draw the animal closer to you. You reach down, gently grasp the fish and unhook it, then release it with a smile on your face after your close encounter with a truly wild animal.

Our week will be filled with animal encounters as we learn aquatic ecology and how to fish responsibly. Come with Audubon as we explore the lakes and waterways around Portland and learn basic skills of fishing. On Wednesday, we depart for the coast to try our hand at deep sea fishing and crabbing on a chartered fishing boat, bringing our bounty back to the campfire for a fresh-cooked dinner! Join us as we strengthen our connection to the land and water by learning to balance the capturing of fish to eat with ensuring that the environment remains healthy for future generations of fish and people.

Bring your own fishing rod and tackle. We’ll be sure to provide gear if you don’t have it. Charter boat provides deep sea fishing gear.

Overnight Wed-Fri.
