The Audubon Society of Portland’s LightsOut Portland launch will be held on September 30 from dusk to dawn. LightsOut Portland aims to help people Save Energy, Save Lives and See Stars! We are encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights from dusk to dawn that night, and then to go outside and check out the night sky! The Lloyd EcoDistrict is cosponsoring the launch event with their own district effort: LightsOut Lloyd PDX. Iconic buildings all around Portland will be going lights out to raise awareness about light pollution, including the Fox Tower, the Wells Fargo Tower, and the Oregon Convention Center! RSVP here.

Nearly 80 percent of North Americans, including Portlanders, live in places from which they can’t see our home galaxy, the Milky Way. What’s more, across the United States, up to 1 billion birds die every year as a result of hitting a window after being lured into lit areas. Light Pollution is the result of poorly designed, unshielded light which drowns out the celestial cues that birds use to navigate while migrating. That light lures them into cities where they are at risk of colliding with windows.

On September 30, we will be hosting a Lights Out event with Sunnyside Elementary School. Students will be putting together a nocturnal species parade, and volunteers from Rose City Astronomers will be on site with their telescopes to help kids and their families see planets, constellations and galaxies!

We are asking businesses and households around the city to turn off unnecessary lights from dusk to dawn on September 30 to raise awareness about light pollution. The goal of the LightsOut Portland campaign is to reduce Light Pollution in the metro area by getting buildings and households to reduce unnecessary lighting, especially during spring and fall migration when birds are at greatest risk. We are also working with the City of Portland to integrate good lighting standards into city policies and plans.

In addition to going Lights Out on September 30, take the time to do a home audit of your own outdoor lighting!

  1. Turn off your outdoor lights when you’re not using them
  2. Make sure that all of your outside lights point down
  3. Convert lights to motion sensors so that they’re only on when needed
  4. Make sure that lights are well-shielded so that they don’t create glare
  5. When converting to LED, make sure you are selecting warm bulbs (under 3,000 Kelvins).
  6. Talk to your boss/building manager at work about minimizing unnecessary nighttime lighting.
  7. On September 30, turn off the lights at home and get out somewhere to see the stars!
