Bird Alliance of Oregon Birding Day: Celebrate the New Year in Washington County *FULL*
You will drive yourself and we will meet at 8 a.m. at Fernhill Wetlands near the restrooms and then carefully bird Fernhill. Waterfowl including swans should be abundant. We are hoping for Swamp Sparrow or Northern Shrike as well.
Around lunchtime, we will move over to Hagg Lake and check for wintering waterfowl and other specialties such as Red-necked Grebe and American Dipper.
Please dress in layers and bring lunch. The day will end around 4 p.m. near Hagg Lake.

Start your 2024 checklist off with a celebration of birds that can be found in Washington County during this time of year.
This outing will challenge you to recognize waterfowl at a greater distance and really put your new skills and knowledge to the test. Forest Grove’s Fernhill Wetlands hosts many species of waterfowl in winter, and we’ll also get looks at grebes, which are not waterfowl but are always swimming. Fernhill also hosts birds of prey, and we’ll be sure to watch for eagles, hawks, and falcons during our outing.

Sun Exposure: Full. Rest Stops: None. Amenities: ADA-accessible restroom in the parking lot. Public Transit: Trimet Bus 57 stops 0.8 miles away in Forest Grove to Fernhill only.
Distance: 1-1.5 miles. Pacing: Slow, with frequent stops to view and listen for birds. Elevation Changes: None. Trail Tread and Average Width: Ten-foot wide trails with a mix of fine gravel, wood chips, and packed dirt.
Hagg Lake Info & Accessibility
Distance: 10 miles driving around lake, making several stops. Walking maybe 1mi total. Pacing: Slow, with frequent stops to view and listen for birds. Elevation changes: There could be small hills to navigate Trail tread and average width: Parking lots, grassy lots, dirt trails. There could be mud. Sun exposure: Full in parking lots, wooded terrain otherwise Rest stops: Several restrooms Amenities: ADA-accessible restroom in the parking lot Public transportation: There is none.
