Audubon Birding Day: Birding by Ear in Wasco County with Brodie Cass Talbott *2 spots left*

Juniper Flats, in Wasco County, is just on the other side of Mt. Hood from Portland, but can feel like it’s on the other side of the country when it comes to bird life. We’ll tour the grasslands and agricultural areas of south Wasco County listening for the songs of central Oregon specialties like Vesper Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, and Townsend’s Solitaire. With luck we may encounter a Grasshopper Sparrow or Loggerhead Shrike.

Notes on accessibility: Participants will drive themselves. We’ll meet at Juniper Flats, about 90 minutes from Portland, and begin exploring the area. We will finish the day at 3 p.m., near the Deschutes River. This trip will feature short hikes, and lots of sun exposure as we bird mostly from roadsides on low-traffic farm roads.

Please join us for the companion class to this field trip:

East of the Cascades
  • May 17, 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Practice your birding by ear skills east of the Cascades.

Head to Oregon’s “dry side” to practice birding by ear with brodie Cass Talbott. We’ll explore dry prairie habitats in search of birds like Townsend’s Solitaire, Vesper Sparrow, and Western Meadowlark. This trip is the companion to our “Birding by Ear: East of the Cascades” class.
