Audubon Birding Day: Birding by Ear in Wasco County with Brodie Cass Talbott *2 spots left*

Juniper Flats, in Wasco County, is just on the other side of Mt. Hood from Portland, but can feel like it’s on the other side of the country when it comes to bird life. We’ll tour the grasslands and agricultural areas of south Wasco County listening for the songs of central Oregon specialties like Vesper Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, and Townsend’s Solitaire. With luck we may encounter a Grasshopper Sparrow or Loggerhead Shrike.

Notes on accessibility: Participants will drive themselves. We’ll meet at Juniper Flats, about 90 minutes from Portland, and begin exploring the area. We will finish the day at 3 p.m., near the Deschutes River. This trip will feature short hikes, and lots of sun exposure as we bird mostly from roadsides on low-traffic farm roads.

Practice your birding by ear skills east of the Cascades.

Head to Oregon’s “dry side” to practice birding by ear with brodie Cass Talbott. We’ll explore dry prairie habitats in search of birds like Townsend’s Solitaire, Vesper Sparrow, and Western Meadowlark. This trip is the companion to our “Birding by Ear: East of the Cascades” class.

Field Trip Details

  • Date: May 18, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Class fee: $65 members / $85 non-members

Mandatory guidelines: 

  • Stay home if you or a member in your household have any symptoms, or if you have been in contact with anyone with these symptoms:
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
  • Everyone drive on their own, with members of their household
  • Everybody must wear a face covering at all times
  • Everybody remain at least 6 feet apart at all times
  • No more than 10 people, plus the instructor
  • Destinations must be within 50 miles of Portland
  • Only go to locations with plenty of room to stay safe:
    • Wide, open spaces are best
    • No crowded trails – limit to early morning walks and/or weekdays
    • Prioritize trails that are one-directional
    • Prioritize locations with trails at least 6-feet wide
