Bird Alliance of Oregon Birding Day: Bald Hill and Ankeny Wildlife Refuge with Dan van den Broek

Our morning will begin at Bald Hill near Corvallis to explore the oak savannah and Willamette Valley native prairie. We’ll walk about 3.5 miles through scenic meadows dotted with wildflowers, oak savannah, and mixed forest. We hope to get good views of Acorn Woodpecker, Western Bluebird, Pacific White-breasted Nuthatch, and Chipping Sparrow. Our main target here will be the Oregon Vesper Sparrow which is only found in valleys west of the Cascade Mountains in small remnant populations. This Vesper Sparrow was common west of Portland in the 1800s. It has disappeared over much of its former range.

As we make our way home, we’ll stop by the two major viewing areas at Ankeny NWR to enjoy various wetland species.

Participants drive themselves on this trip. Dan will reach out with further details before the trip.

Trip limited to 10 participants.

Masks are optional on this outdoor program.
