Intermediate Birding by Ear: East of the Cascades with Brodie Cass Talbott

In this class, we’ll focus on bird vocalizations east of the Cascades, building upon skills and techniques covered in the Beginning Birding by Ear series.

Westside birders crossing the mountains encounter an entirely new soundscape. Gone are the sweet warblers of our familiar forest birds, replaced by the thin trills of grassland sparrows, and chatters of open country flycatchers. In this class, we’ll listen to the calls and songs of these dryside singers like Canyon Wren, Western Kingbird, and Say’s Phoebe, and learn some tips for remembering them next time we’re in the field.
