Field Trip: Birdwatching for Beginners with Brodie Cass Talbott

This is a self-driving trip and we will be car caravanning across the island. You must have an ODFW parking permit, which can be purchased online or at the small market on the island, or the 7-11 in Linnton.

Is your New Year’s resolution to spend more time outside? Bird-watching might be just the thing for you! In this introduction to bird-watching, we’ll cover the basics as we search for the many eagles, hawks, and falcons that winter on the island. We’ll keep an eye out for the huge flocks of Sandhill Cranes that have made the island so well-known among birders, and scan for the many kinds of ducks and geese that fill the wetlands. Bring your own binoculars if you have them, and no worries if not – we’re happy to bring a pair for you. 

We will be caravanning across the island, visiting three of the main birding locations. Come dressed for the weather! 

Accessibility

Distance: Most of our stops will be stationary birding. Our last stop will involve a short walk of up to a half mile.
Elevation changes: None
Trail: The short walk will be along a dirt/gravel road.
Pacing: A birder’s pace (slow!)
Rest Stops: Two of our stops will have a bench if needed.
Sun Exposure: Partial (let’s hope for some sun!)
Amenities (bathrooms and parking): Portapotties at each location. Large parking lots at each location, but visitors must have an ODFW parking permit, which can be purchased online or at the small market on the island, or the 7-11 in Linnton. Your trip leader can try to help arrange carpooling.
Public transit: Trimet Bus 16 serves the Park & Ride at the entrance to the island. If you would like to take the bus to the island and carpool with someone in the group, please contact your trip leader and they can try to arrange this.

New year, new birds!

The new year is a great time to try something new! In this beginner-focused trip, we’ll visit Sauvie Island, the Portland area’s most storied birding location, and learn how to find and identify birds of prey, cranes, geese, songbirds and more.

Brodie Cass Talbott

Brodie works as an educator with Portland Audubon. After many years of wildland firefighting and leading river tours, he spent six years living and teaching across Asia, where his interest in birds became his passion. He has birded across five continents, and uses his experience in education and ecotourism to share his love of the outdoors with people from all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, with an eye towards increasing access to wild spaces for people from diverse communities.
