*FULL* Broken Top Backpacker (9 days, August 15-23)
Join Portland Audubon’s expert staff for this amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience! Laugh harder than you have in years and create community as you build your strength, confidence and wilderness skills while hiking along the rugged peaks of the Three Sisters Wilderness, Oregon’s second largest designated wilderness area. With the wilds of Oregon as our classroom, we will work together to learn the secrets behind backcountry skills such as Orienteering, Leave No Trace principles, Basic First Aid, Survival Skills, Camp Hygiene, Choosing a Campsite, and Backcountry Cooking.
We will stay at a campground near Bend for the first three nights, learning skills in preparation to hit the trail. After we divide group gear, load up our food, and check each other’s packs we will head into the backcountry to put our new skills to use. The spectacular 22-mile loop around Broken Top will be our home for four nights giving us the opportunity to learn about the history of this landscape, swim in chilly alpine lakes, watch shooting stars, and appreciate the community that we build”.
As we exit the backcountry, having built lasting connections with the land and each other in some of the most pristine wilderness the Pacific Northwest has to offer, we will camp in the frontcountry for our final night to share stories and celebrate the week’s achievements before returning to Portland.
Note: While in the backcountry, please be prepared to carry 30-40lbs and hike 4-8 miles per day over varying and sometimes steep terrain. Strength and endurance are essential for you to appreciate all that this program has to offer!
