Join Portland Audubon on our first trip to China! We will be headed to beautiful Yunnan province where a neat mix of mind-numbing scenery, delicious cuisine, and ancient culture is awaiting us! Make no mistake, the birding in the area is superb as well.
We will spend several days in the bird-rich forests and valleys of Nabang, just a stone’s throw from the Myanmar border to look for Gray Peacock-Pheasant, Jerdon’s Baza, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Ibisbill, Blue-throated and Blue-eared Barbet, Greater and Lesser Yellownape, Long-tailed and Silver-breasted Broadbill, Great Slaty Woodpecker, and many more.
We will also have several days in and around Mt. Gaoligong, an extension of the mighty Himalayas, where we will bird the mid-elevation broadleaf forests, walking the trails and visiting several feeding stations. Targets include Lady Amherst’s Pheasant, Rufous-throated and Hill Partridge, Mountain Bamboo-Partridge, Rusty-fronted Barwing, three species of scimitar-babblers, White-browed Shortwing, several species of Laughingthrushes, and Himalayan Bluetail. We are going to attempt to see the rare Gould’s Shortwing, but this is by no means guaranteed. We will also walk the trails of what once was part of the Southern Silk Road. The area is famous for its hides offering spectacular looks of many difficult-to-see species of the area.
We will have another go at the Lady Amherst’s Pheasant near Dali if we missed it before, try for the endangered Baer’s Pochard at Erhai Lake and Black-necked Crane, Steppe and Imperial Eagle at Napa Lake near Shangri-La. Also near Shangri-La we will be looking for Giant Laughingthrush, Long-billed Plover, and Long-tailed Rosefinch.
One of our cultural stops will be Dali Old Town and the Three Pagodas nearby – we will spend an afternoon there. Another important cultural stop is the Songzanlin Tibetan Monastery near Shangri-La.
Note: Some of the areas towards the end of the trips are at an elevation up to 11,000 feet, but we will be able to acclimatize slowly as we move higher up in elevation.
