Dominican Republic
The island of Hispaniola is one of the most bio-diverse globally, including dry forest, cloud forest, rain forest, and pine forest. We hope to see, among others, the endangered Ridgway’s Hawk, West Indian Whistling Duck, Ashy-faced Owl, the odd Palmchat, La Selle Thrush, the cute Broad-billed Tody, a seemingly out-of-place Hispaniolan Crossbill, and the beautiful Black-crowned Tanager. We will visit the Zapoten cloud forest, Villa Barrancoli Birding Lodge, Lomo Charco Azul, Chacote Birding Lodge, and Los Haitises, where we will track the petroglyphs of the indigenous Taino people.
We begin from Santo Domingo with a visit to a great Hispaniolan Parakeet site in the Colonial Zone of the city, followed by a beautiful scenic drive out west to the majestic Bahoruco Mountains and Sierra de Bahoruco National Park in the southwest where, for the next five magical days, we will be staying in and around the mountains and spending the mornings, afternoons and nights exploring fantastic birding sites such as Zapoten Cloud Forest, Villa Barrancoli Birding Lodge, Rabo de Gato Nature Trail, Loma Charco Azul Biological Preserve, and Cachote Cloud Forest. In this area, you will be able to explore a wide variety of ecosystems. These all are part of the unique ecology found in the Dominican Republic, one of the most bio-diverse islands in the world.
Join us for a memorable trip at just the right time of the year!
