Earth Hour

Raise awareness about climate change action by the simple act of turning out our lights! One of Bird Alliance of Oregon’s priorities is reducing light pollution in our metropolitan areas and across the state. This year, we encourage everyone to take part in the hour-long event. Have a candle-light dinner or go stargazing! Learn more about Earth Hour.

April will bring this year’s International Dark Sky Week: Sunday, April 19 – Sunday, April 26 on the theme Open a Window to the Night. IDSW was started by a high school student in 2003 who “wants people to be able to see the wonder of the night sky without the effects of light pollution. The universe is our view into our past and our vision into the future. … I want to help preserve its wonder.” The event draws attention to the issue of light pollution and promotes simple things we can do to help preserve dark skies!

A few easy and fun ways to participate:

  • Take the Pledge to go Lights Out, and talk to your friends about the importance of dark skies;
  • Look around your house for opportunities to turn off unnecessary lights, install motion sensors, and shield lighting;
  • Watch Losing the Dark about the importance of dark skies;
  • Check out the Saving the Dark trailer on YouTube and watch for upcoming showings in Portland
