Field Trip: Birding by Ear at Powell Butte with Brodie Cass Talbott *3 spots left*

We’ll revisit Powell Butte to see what has moved in and what has moved on. This trip will focus on developing our ear birding, with repeated attention on all the songs and calls we hear, from the common birds like Song Sparrow and Northern Flickers, to the newly arrived migrants like Common Yellowthroat and Purple Finch. We’ll pay special attention to migrating warblers and local specialties like Savannah Sparrow.

*Meeting location will be emailed to you by your leader several days before the field trip.

Limited to 10 participants.

This outdoor program will require masks and follow all physical distancing and safety protocols dictated by the Oregon Health Administration. Scroll down for details.

Let's welcome back migratory birds!

Join Brodie for an early migration field trip at one of Portland’s birding hot spots, Powell Butte Nature Park.

What to Expect

  • Trails: Powell Butte trails are generally wide and mostly flat gravel trails on exposed, full sun landscape. Where trails enter forested sections they become narrower and often steeper. Most walking on these trips will be out in the open. A typical trip is ~3 miles.
  • Getting There: Powell Blvd. is serviced by Trimet #9, but it is still a fair distance from Powell to the parking lot on top of Powell Butte. Cyclists should be prepared for a ½ mile, steep hill to access the parking lot. The gates to Powell Butte open at 7 a.m.
  • Bathrooms: There are bathrooms only at the visitor center. They are currently replaced by portapotties.
