The Hummingbird Family with Erin Law

Join Erin on a journey through the amazing evolutionary history, powerful physiology, interesting anatomy, and fascinating natural history of these charming birds.

In the first part of the class, we will examine the evolution of this highly adapted family. We will then look at how their morphology and physiology have led this group to be one of the most efficient pollinators in the world.

In the second part of this class, we will discuss the natural history of this huge family of 349 species. From their constant quest to locate nectar and insects to fuel a high-energy lifestyle to their amazing courtship displays, there is plenty to discover. Finally, we will talk about conservation concerns facing the future of one of the most recognizable families of birds on this planet.
