Malheur After Dark

Come celebrate dark skies and all things nocturnal at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters. This program will take visitors behind the gates to the Blitzen River boat launch. There, we’ll take an evening bird walk, look for bats and badgers, and enjoy a star viewing experience with the Oregon Observatory. ADA compliant bathrooms are available at headquarters. Parking will be available at the boat launch. See below for schedule and to sign-up.

Sunset River Walk | 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Many birders enjoy exploring Malheur NWR near sunrise, or early in the day. We’ll be changing things up a bit with this evening bird walk, looking for birds to emerge as the temperatures cool down. We will be parking near the boat launch and walking along the Blitzen River.

Bat Walk and Badger Quest | 8:15 – 9 p.m.

For this nocturnal outing we’ll break out the bat detector and see which bat species are out foraging. We’ll talk about why Malheur is important for Oregon bat species. Bats aren’t the only mammals we’ll keep an eye out for. We’ll be on the look out for badgers and maybe a bobcat!

Star Program | 9 – 10 p.m.

We’ll conclude the evening with an eye toward the sky with Oregon Observatory. View planets, stars, globular clusters, maybe even the “blue cheerio,” the Andromeda Galaxy, and other super cool space objects.
