Marbled Murrelet Survey at Cape Perpetua

Please join us for the 18th annual Marbled Murrelet community science survey on a spectacular stretch of Oregon’s coast. Currently we are planning for the event to be in-person only but we may offer a hybrid option depending on interest.

The event starts with an evening presentation at Yachats Commons with Oregon State University Marbled Murrelet expert Kim Nelson and Bird Alliance of Oregon Ten Mile Creek Sanctuary manager, Paul Engelmeyer, and potentially other guests. The presentation will cover the life history, ecology of this unique bird and the conservation challenges it faces. We will also provide instruction on how to identify and survey for this elusive bird.

The following day, participants get up early to help survey for Marbled Murrelets at a number of locations in the Cape Perpetua area as murrelets return to their old-growth and mature forest nesting grounds from nearshore foraging areas. Staging will take place in scenic Yachats, on the central coast of Oregon, and we’ll survey for endangered Marbled Murrelets in the Cummins, Ten Mile, and Yachats landscape. This area includes the ‘Globally Significant’ Central Coast Murrelet Important Bird Area. We will finish by surveying the ocean for marbled murrelets in their near-shore feeding areas. Training will be provided, so no prior experience is needed. RSVP required!
