Nature Night, Centering Justice and Identity – Building Inclusive Scientific Communities for Our Shared Future

Sprinavasa Brown, co-founder of ELSO Inc., has a deep passion for social justice, racial equity in education, and solving complex problems facing communities of color.

Join us for Nature Night to learn how she and her team are breaking down barriers and decolonizing science to make the outdoors and environmental education more inclusive. She’ll share her experience in creating space for youth of color in STEAM and the outdoors in a majority setting with limited influence of Whiteness; the dominant culture that influences societal norms.

About Sprinavasa

Sprinavasa is a recognized change agent, community leader, and advocate for education, equity, and inclusion. Sprinavasa, along with Dr. Kellianne Richardson, created ELSO Inc. (formerly known as Camp ELSO) to cultivate an environment they never had: a place where youth of color have the opportunity to see people who look like them as their science teachers, and career mentors. Sprinavasa is a recipient of the Bonner Scholars Award at Oberlin College for outstanding community leadership and service. She earned a BA from Oberlin with a double major in Biology and African American Studies, and a MA in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University. Sprinavasa has experience advising and working alongside local agencies and regional government to further communication, engagement, and outreach to communities of color. She currently sits on the board of the Historic Albina Vision Project.
