The New School of Birding: Breeding Ecology and Birdsong

We are pleased to announce our second module of the New School of Birding, taught by expert bird nerds Dan van den Broek and Candace Larson.

The songs of birds are one of the most appreciated sounds of nature, and few things announce the changing seasons so profoundly. As days get longer and spring unfolds, the trees burst forth with a growing chorus of sounds to enchant us, and sometimes confound us, with their richness and complexity. From the first, familiar trills of the backyard Bewick’s Wren to the flute-like virtuosity of a Swainson’s Thrush arriving from central Mexico, spring brings us an opportunity to deepen our relationship with the wonderful assortment of species that are found in our region.

In this module, we’ll explore how and why birds sing, diving into breeding and nesting ecology from courtship and nest building to mating and fledging. Along the way, we’ll help you level up your birding-by-ear skills as we investigate bird song from duets to dialects and practice together in the field. The New School of Birding is designed to build both birding skills and a deeper understanding of the ecology and biology of our feathered friends. Each module of this exciting, interactive program includes six virtual class sessions and three field trips, focusing on a different feature of bird biology, plus tips, tricks, and practice with field identification, all provided through a combination of lecture, online quizzes, helpful handouts, live interaction with your instructors, and extensive field time.

We hope you’ll join us on this exciting journey!
