Pacific Northwest Trip: Olympic Peninsula with Stefan Schlick

Embark on an exhilarating adventure with us as we journey through the captivating landscapes of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, where every moment is filled with anticipation and awe-inspiring vistas! Prepare to be enchanted by the spellbinding beauty of the high Olympics and the snow-capped peaks of the Northern Cascades, painting a breathtaking backdrop to our expedition.

What sets this trip apart is the opportunity to witness ocean species, from loons to the charismatic alcids (murres, guillemots, auklets, puffins, and murrelets), all within the serene and sheltered waters of the bays along the Strait. Here, amidst the tranquil embrace of nature, sightings are not just common; they’re extraordinary, offering unparalleled views unlike anywhere else along the rugged coasts of Oregon and Washington.

Our journey begins with a northward voyage from Portland to our base in Port Angeles, where the adventure unfolds. Along the way, we’ll pause to marvel at the Hood Canal, where Barrow’s Goldeneye and the captivating Harlequin Duck await our discovery. At Point Wilson in Port Townsend, we’ll look for loons and alcids, dancing against a beautiful backdrop.

But the excitement reaches new heights with a day trip to Neah Bay, an absolute must for every adventurer! This stop will be our best chance to find rarities like Tropical Kingbirds and Palm Warblers, who show up annually. As we explore the wonders of Neah Bay, we’ll also make a stop at the Makah Museum, an archaeological and anthropological museum on the Makah reservation.

Venturing further into the Sequim area, to look for Long-tailed Duck, Marbled Murrelets and more. And while the Yellow-billed Loon may remain a rarity, our quest for discovery knows no bounds, as we eagerly investigate every loon that crosses our path.
