COVID-19 Update: All Rock Creek field surveys are on hold until the Executive Order is lifted and PCC Rock Creek campus is re-opened. Our May 2 training is still on, but we’ve shifted from in-person to online via Zoom.

_____

Join Candace Larson, Bird Alliance of Oregon Field Biologist, for an online orientation/training to our ongoing Community Science project in the beautiful greenspace next to Rock Creek Community College.

The training will cover the following:

  • Site history and restoration plan for the Rock Creek floodplain.
  • Preliminary results from 2019 Community Science and other survey efforts.
  • Review of protocol and site logistics.
  • Virtual orientation to the nature trail and some common birds at the site.

About this Project

By taking part in this community science project, you’ll help us understand how birds are responding to habitat restoration efforts as you bird along a trail. The goal of this project is to collect baseline information on the bird communities that use this greenspace as Clean Water Services implements a long-term floodplain enhancement project at this site.  This project aims to maintain a healthy Rock Creek watershed while also providing quality wildlife habitat and connectivity.

Bird Alliance of Oregon has developed an easy-to-follow protocol for birders to collect key bird data to inform this effort.

Volunteer requirements:

  • Birding skills: Must be able to identify Pacific Northwest birds by sight and sound; must be comfortable using eBird. Less experienced volunteers can record data for the bird counter.
  • Equipment: Must have your own binoculars.
  • Field conditions: Must be able to walk 1-2 miles on paved and dirt paths.
  • Transportation and Parking at the site is your responsibility

Get Involved

Please contact Candace Larson (clarson@birdallianceoregon.org) to RSVP for the training and either Candace or Joe Liebezeit (jliebezeit@birdallianceoregon.org) for any other questions about the project.
