Plein Air Watercolor Painting on Sauvie Island: Beaches

*This is an in-person art class for intermediate and ambitious beginners.


Let’s head out to Sauvie Island. Come prepared with all your painting gear. We’ll have some fun adventure watercolor painting at the local beaches.  Set up an easel or a lawn chair and paint the cool water on a hot summer day! One of the best ways to truly see and understand the beauty of the landscape is to paint outside (plein air). We will spend the day studying the landscape with watercolor as students learn the basics of setting up outdoors, simplifying compositions, mixing colors, and expressive brush strokes. We will meet ahead of time at the Island Cove Market on Reeder Road, then head over to the beach.

Location: Meet at Island Cove Market, 31421 NW Reeder Road, Portland, OR 97231.  Once everyone has arrived, we will drive over to the beach and paint. 

You will need an ODFW Wildlife Area parking permit for the parking lot at the beach.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and sun. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and lunch.
Limited to 10 participants.

Public transit: Not available.
Rest stops: You will be seated for this class, sitting in what you bring to make you comfortable: a folding chair, blanket, easel, and folding tv table, for example.

Parking: Parking lot. Participants need an ODFW Wildlife Area parking permit.

Meet the Instructor

Ronna Fujisawa

Ronna Fujisawa, MFA in Applied Craft and Design, from OCAC and PNCA/ BFA Miami University, Oxford, Ohio Artist, art educator, and outdoor enthusiast. Ronna’s creative practice focuses on painting, mixed media, fiber art, and growing indigo for natural dye and paint. She has been living in Portland for seven years. She has found a strong connection to nature and birds through plein air (painting outdoors), watercolor painting, hiking, and kayaking. Her teaching practice includes painting classes at Catlin Gabel School Community Program for adults, Portland Fine Arts Guild, online, and plein air (painting outdoors) watercolor classes for all ages. She has taught Bird Art to elementary school children in Portland Public Schools for six years before the pandemic. Over the last two years, her educational practice has shifted to adult classes, both in-person and zoom. Ronna has been passionately studying and painting birds and landscapes in watercolor for over a decade. Her classes cater to beginner and intermediate students.
