Portugal in Winter

Experience lovely Portugal during its mild winter with very pleasant weather during the day. Also, we will enjoy the wonderful cuisine on the Iberian Peninsula! From Cape Saint Vincent, we will watch the sea for Great Skua, Balearic Shearwater, and Northern Gannet and look in other habitats for specialties such as Blue Rock Thrush and European Golden-Plover. With luck we may find Eleonora’s Falcon.

There will be many shorebirds (Bar-tailed GodwitSpotted RedshankLittle Stint) to find in the many excellent and productive wetlands in the Algarve, such as Quinto do Lago, Rio de Alvor, and Lagoa de Salgados. This area is also great for wintering Bluethroat.

In the dry steppes of the Alentejo, we will look for Black-bellied SandgrouseCommon Crane, larks, and Great and Little Bustard. An excursion to the Vale do Guadiana should yield Griffon Vultures and maybe the rare and exciting Bonelli’s Eagle.

On our last day, we will explore the Belém Tower, an architectural jewel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will also visit the São Jorge castle overlooking the center of Lisbon and then we will spend the afternoon in delightful Sintra.
