Urban Ecology and Conservation (UERC) Symposium

Don’t miss Portland’s very own annual symposium focusing on urban environmental issues and the practical application of related ecological and social science research in the Portland/Vancouver region. UERC is a consortium of people from educational institutions, state and federal agencies, local governments, non-profit organizations and businesses, as well as independent professionals and students, interested in supporting urban ecosystem research and creating an information sharing network to collect, share, and use ecological data in the Portland/Vancouver area. Download the flyer.

Keynotes

Dr. Nalini Nadkarni – Forest Canopy Ecologist and Science Communicator
Dr. Nalini Nadkarni’s academic research interests include the ecological roles that canopy-dwelling plants play in forests at multiple spatial and temporal scales, and the effects of forest fragmentation and climate change on the biodiversity and ecosystem function of canopy communities. Her field sites are in Monteverde, Costa Rica, and on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. Her research is supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Geographic Society, and the Mellon Foundation.

PK DasArchitect & Activist
P K Das’ priority has been to establish a very close relation between architecture and people by involving them in a participatory planning process. His firm P K Das and Associates’ wide spectrum of work includes projects in urban planning and design, architecture, interiors and social and environmental sectors. Das is also actively involved in evolving affordable housing models, engaging in policy framework for mass housing, reclaiming public space in Mumbai by developing the waterfronts, urban renewal and conservation projects. He has been widely published and has also delivered talks and lectures across the world. His work in the development of Mumbai’s coastline and his slum rehab projects have won him several national and international awards including the first Urban Age award conferred to the Mumbai Waterfronts Centre whose Chairperson is P K Das.

Plus an assortment of short talks highlighting many of the ecology and conservation projects in the Portland Metro region.
