Beginner’s Duck: Waterfowl Basics

The ducks, geese, and swans that spend the winter in Portland provide an excellent opportunity to fine tune your birding skills. This class will cover the fieldmarks, behavior, habitats and sounds of our local waterfowl, preparing you for winter birding. Learn strategies for solving tricky identification challenges like white-cheeked geese and scaup. Find out more about the interesting lives of the ducks you might be taking for granted. Your instructor, Sarah Swanson, will provide a fun atmosphere for learning, where birders of all levels are welcome.

An optional field trip on Saturday will give us a chance to apply what we’ve learned in class to real-life ID challenges. We’ll visit some Portland birding hotspots to observe the behavior and habitat of each species and build our waterfowl knowledge.
