Western Oregon Urban Forests for the Birds

Join us for Western Oregon Urban Forests for the Birds, a half-day workshop for woodland caretakers including landowners, HOA and condo/apartment communities, park managers, foresters, natural resource managers, or anyone interested in natural resource conservation. Put on by the Forest Stewards Guild, an expert birder from Bird Alliance of Oregon and the West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District’s forest conservationist will join for the day to help demonstrate the Guide and identify birds and habitat preferences.

Three people in Forest Park birding

This Guide was developed to assist woodland caretakers with identifying, assessing, and supporting a healthy forest with birds in mind. We will review the Guide while walking through the Sanctuary learning more about the focal birds within the Guide and bird habitat preferences. We will identify trees and plants, learn more about the forest types of Western Oregon, and the forest structure and variability that make appealing habitat for different bird species. In addition, in fitting with the location of this workshop, we will be applying the Guide to urban forests.

You do not need to be an expert birder for this outing or a forest landowner. Just bring your curiosity, willingness to share, and if you have them, binoculars. We will have coffee and cake for the early bird, so we hope to see you bright and early in May!

Accessibility Information

Paths around the facility are of varying terrain and lead to steep trails. Here are details on our trails to help inform your decision on if these trails are right for you:
- Trails have steep elevation changes of 100-300 feet
- Trail surface is largely hard packed soil. They are uneven in places due to rocks and roots. During the wet season (October through June), trails become very muddy in areas. Trails are also narrow in places.
- Benches are located at multiple points along trails but are not on every trail. A more detailed map with bench locations is currently being made and will be released as soon as it’s ready.
- Rugged stairs are placed at multiple locations along trails.
