Winter Wonders: Deepening our Connection with Birds and the Natural World with Kate Kohut

This is a 3-week combined online and in-person class.

The online class portion will use Zoom meetings to create a community feel where all participants can see each other and interact. The field class locations will be Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, Fernhill Wetlands, and Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. These are intentionally short field classes to accommodate possible undesirable winter weather and will happen rain or shine.

Even though winter can sometimes feel bleak and barren, if you stop to look around, you might just notice there’s more happening around you than meets the eye!

Weekly online classes will focus on identification tips and fun facts about local winter species, as well as ideas and prompts for optional solo journal activities. The field classes will take place on Saturday mornings in natural areas around Portland. This time outdoors will include birding, nature observation, and reflective field journaling. Journal activities and prompts may include writing, art/sketching, or recording natural observations and questions/wonders.

Beginner and intermediate birders welcome, we will be focusing not just on winter species identification but on slowing down and taking note of the small changes and amazing wonders that surround us when we stop to pay attention outside.

Never journaled before? No problem! Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist or have never journaled before, this class is still for you! We will be going over some basic techniques and activities which can be scaled according to individual interests and skill level.

Please bring a sketchbook/pad to act as your field journal, pencils, pens, and if you wish, supplies to add color to your drawings.
