100 Birds of Summer

Join Teresa Wicks, Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Eastern Oregon Field Coordinator for 100 Birds of Summer, a series of family and beginning birder-friendly programs connecting people to birds and nature. Over the course of the summer, we’ll aim to see 100 bird species, from forests to wetlands, and places in-between. But don’t be fooled, this series isn’t only for serious listers, we’re aiming to create community while exploring the birds and ecosystems that Harney County has to offer. Binoculars will be available.

See below for list of events happening in June, July and August and join us!

100 Birds of Summer Calendar of events

JUNE  |  RSVP

  • June 3: Malheur Big Sit
Join Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Eastern Oregon Field Coordinator for our first ever Malheur Big Sit. This is an accessible, inclusive outing and BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and beginning birders and bird-enthusiasts are welcome.
  • June 4: Delintment Lake Hike
Starting at the dam, we’ll make our way around Delintment, looking for Williamson’s Sapsuckers, waterfowl, and other passerines. After the almost 2-mile hike around the lake, we’ll have the option to meander up the Delintment Creek Trail.
  • June 11: Families Gone Birding
This family-friendly bird walk will start at Malheur National Wildlife Headquarters at 10:00 in the parking lot. Children of all ages, and families of all kinds, are invited to come for a casual walk around Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters.
  • June 25: Birds, Bikes & Brews
Cycling fans rejoice! On this outing we’ll meet at Spark Collaborative Studios at 8:00. We’ll ride from there, south on Broadway, then ride a loop along Egan Rd, Hotchkiss, and the Harney Wildlife Parkway/Nature Trail.

JULY  |  RSVP

  • July 1: Birds and Beer
Looking for a way to kick-off the holiday weekend? Join us on this relaxing evening bird walk, then head down the hill to Steens Mountain Brewing for some good food, beers, and good conversation.
  • July 9: Mindful Birding – Pride Edition
Spend the morning of Harney County’s Pride birding at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters casually and mindfully walking the paths while we do our best to find a rainbow of bird colors, and a mixtape of bird songs. This program is a great opportunity to bring out your sketch books, poetry skills, cameras, and an interest in connecting to birds and nature while creating community.
  • July 16: Strawberry Basin Hike
We will caravan to Strawberry Basin Trail in Malheur National Forest and start at the Strawberry Basin Trailhead and hike the 2.8 miles to Strawberry Falls. We’ll keep an eye out for forest birds and high elevation waterfowl, wildflowers, ripe huckleberries, and mountain goats.
  • July 23: Families Gone Birding
Youth and families are invited to come explore the Harney Wildlife Parkway/Nature Trail. We’ll walk at a casual pace and look for signs of baby birds and bird families along the nature trail. There will be some fun bird-themed activities for youth to do while walking and to take home.
  • July 29: Birds and Beers
We’ll meet at the headquarters parking lot at 5:00 and bird for an hour before making our way to The Narrows RV park for a little birding, great conversation, food, and beers. We’ll keep an eye out for Burrowing Owls, which are often seen in the area.

AUGUST  |  RSVP

  • August 6: Birds, Bikes and Brews
We’ll bike up Broadway to Foley Rd and travel in a loop around the Silvies River and stop at several points along the way to scan riparian vegetation and agricultural fields for birds. We’ll also stop to peek at some feeders on Foley Rd and at the 5-mile Dam. Our outing will wrap up with coffees at Bella Java in Burns.
  • August 19: Birds and Beers
We’ll meet at the Idlewild Picnic Shelter at 5 p.m. and hike through the forest and along shrubby areas where Green-tailed Towhee are often spotted until about 7:00pm. We’ll start a fire in the picnic shelter’s fire ring and share in good conversation around the fire until 7:30pm. Participants will need to bring their own food and BYOB for dinner.
  • August 27: Mindful Birding
The Wilderness Trail at Page Springs Campground provides a perfect backdrop for our last outing of the year – we’ll meet at 8 a.m. Mindful birding doesn’t require expert birders – it encourages being present, noticing different sounds and colors and textures of birds, and nature, around you. This program is a great opportunity to bring out your sketch books, poetry skills, cameras, and an interest in connecting to birds and nature while creating community.
