Join Audubon Society of Portland on a five-day tour to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge located in remote and beautiful southeastern Oregon. Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a world-class birder's paradise. A variety of habitats, including extensive marshes, sagebrush flats, riparian thickets, and rimrock support a diversity of wildlife. Field birding and natural history are the focus of this exciting five-day program.

Destinations and Birds

We'll search for Golden Eagles, Black-necked Stilts, White-faced Ibis, Burrowing Owl, Sandhill Cranes and Prairie Falcons as well as mammals such as Pronghorn, Coyote and Mule Deer among the wealth of wildlife.

Our program is timed to coincide with peak bird migration and species diversity. Explore the vast refuge and surrounding areas, including the east side of Steens Mountain and the Alvord Desert, on daily field excursions led by experienced naturalists from Audubon Society of Portland. Be prepared for some wondrous sights, chilly nights and lots of birds. The elevation is about 4000 feet, and the snow-capped Steens Mountain looms on our horizon the entire time.
