TALON Program

The Audubon Society of Portland's TALON program provides paid training and employment for young adults ages 16-20 as they learn to Teach, Advocate, Lead, Observe and Nurture – skills that will help them excel in conservation-related professions. Based out of our main location in Northwest Portland and Eastside branch at Leach Botanical Garden, TALON aims to reach diverse cultural and ethnic communities living in Portland, East Multnomah County, Gresham, and North Clackamas.

We work with local high schools, colleges and community organizations to recruit participants who have shown an interest in conservation and science. By introducing a younger and more ethnically diverse population to careers in conservation, and environmental education, TALON aims to help empower the next generation of conservation leaders to diversify the conservation dialogue and help shape Portland Audubon’s conservation and education mission into the 21st century.

Applications are open for the summer of 2019!

Download application and email all application materials to yhan@audubonportland.org.

TALON members participate in a 10 Saturday spring training program that provides a foundation in social and environmental justice issues, local natural history, job skills-building, environmental science, and local and regional conservation issues. Each participant is then placed in a 10 week summer apprenticeship position in environmental education, community science, wildlife rehabilitation, communications, or trail restoration. Participants must complete 9/10 Saturday training days in order to be placed in a summer apprenticeship.

Amy Frank Tribute Fund for TALON
In honor of Amy Frank’s invaluable contributions to Audubon Society of Portland, her family has established a memorial scholarship fund for Portland Audubon’s TALON program.

The TALON program provides leadership, skills-based training, and paid apprenticeships in conservation to youth of color living in the Portland Metro area. TALON builds leadership in the environmental community that reflects the region’s diversity.

As a volunteer in Portland Audubon’s Wildlife Care Center, her love for wildlife and nature was apparent – and inspiring to all the volunteers and staff she worked with. Through your gift in memory of Amy, you are supporting youth in their development of environmental stewardship skills that helps them find their place in our natural world while actively developing career readiness skills that will help them to succeed in their professional goals. DONATE TO THE FUND
