Wild Wintercrafting *FULL*

Get inspired to be crafty as we hike our trails, visit with our Ambassador Animals and find natural objects to incorporate into your art. You will learn how to make rolled beeswax and scented candles to cast a warm and lovely glow on the cold days of winter. Create colorful drawings and mixed media art based on your observations and found objects from our wildlife habitat at the Bird Alliance of Oregon Sanctuary.

November Break Camp, Grades 3-5: Fall Flight

Spend the day learning about the amazing adaptation of flight and bird migration! We will dive into all sorts of animals that use flight as their main mode of transportation and investigate the different adaptations that allow them to do this amazing feat! We will look at specimens, create flight themed art projects, look for these animals in the forest and learn about the challenges that these airborne creatures face.

November Break Camp, Grades 1-2: Magical Forest

Many magical creatures roam the forest floor when we’re not looking. Join us for Magical Forest Camp to explore the trails in search of our Nature Sanctuary’s enchanted wonders! From fairies and gnomes, to furry critters who stay hidden, we will learn how to hone our senses, make art and create homes for these animals and magical beings.

Winter Break Camp: Birds in Winter, Grades 4-6

Come learn about the birds that stay in Portland, the birds that migrate out and why they do what they do! We will walk the forest searching for winter residents, travel to a nearby wetland, and play games to take a deeper dive into bird survival and create crafts to help birds in the winter!

Wild Salmon Run!, Grades 3-5 *FULL*

Come join the wild Salmon run in the Columbia River Gorge on this exciting search for wildlife! We’ll visit a fish hatchery to explore the trails and diverse habitat. We will hike parts of the forest that are supported by the salmon run and if luck joins us, we could spot a few Osprey and Bald Eagle.

Returning Song Birds, Grades 3-5 *FULL*

Experience the colorful songbirds returning from their winter homes. Go deep into the woods with binoculars in hand to search for our feathered friends. Then return back to base to sketch, draw and color your findings on paper. You will also have time to sing back some of the incredible sounds that you experienced in the forest at spring time.

Trunks, Barks, and Leaves, Grades 3-5

Come explore the tall, green and brown beings that inhabit our local forest. Learn to identify different tree barks, sketch the shapes of leaves, collect samples in the forest and even plant your own seeds. We will make nature-based crafts with the natural materials that our nurturing forest provides.

A Bug’s Life, Grades 1-3 *FULL*

This camp is all about learning more about what makes these animals so awesome! We will meet some live insects from around Oregon and you’ll have a chance to better understand the role they play in our ecosystems and ways to appreciate them for who they are. After meeting some bugs and spiders up close we will spend time in the sanctuary seeking out some of the local inhabitants that call this forest home.

Bushtits seem like adorable, friendly balls of fluff but how much do you really know about these mysterious little birds?  Join Dr. Sarah Sloane as she reveals some of the intriguing complexities of bushtit social structure she has uncovered during her research in Arizona and Portland.

Urban Wildlife Information Network (UWIN): Camera Trap Training and Volunteer Meet-Up

The UWIN PDX project tracks urban wildlife using camera traps, working with community members to place cameras along habitat corridors. Join us for an evening to celebrate the hard work of our current volunteers and welcome new volunteers interested in joining the project. The event will include a training session focused on camera trap deployment and common species identification, as well as explore recent data collected and future goals of the project.

No School Day Camp – Fun Fridays: Salmon Run!, Grades 3-6

Join us for a day in the Gorge as we go in search of Salmon trying to find their way back to spawn! We will learn about the geology that made the Gorge habitat so special, hike the trails, and visit the Bonneville Fish Hatchery to try and find these amazing fish that are so important to the ecology of the Pacific Northwest.

No School Day Camp – Fun Fridays: Animal Tracking, Grades 3-6

Head to Jackson Bottom Wetlands, one of the conservation jewels of Washington County in search of birds and mammals that call this marsh home. You will learn about the tracks that these animals leave behind such as paw prints, scat, nests and tree markings and all the special adaptations that these creatures have in order to help them prepare for the upcoming cold winter.

No School Day Camp – Fantastic Fungi, Grades 1-3 *FULL*

It’s not a plant, it’s not an animal — it’s a FUNGUS! Join us in our Nature Sanctuary to explore the fantastic, wonderful and weird world of fungi! We’ll learn why fungus is important to forest health and we’ll hike the trails in search of these amazing organisms, discovering mushrooms that can help us and harm us and how they help the forest. We will make crafts inspired by mushrooms and learn about some of their incredible adaptations!

No School Day Camp – Fun Fridays: Wetland Wonders, Grades 3-6

Fernhill Wetlands is a success story for ecological restoration in the Portland Metro area! On this camp you will experience the importance of wetlands for wildlife and the role that humans can play in protecting these key ecosystems that provide safe havens for hundreds of animals that depend on them to survive. Spend the day searching for wildlife and investigate specimens that live in the area.

Put your detective hat on and come out and spend the day investigating the clues that animals leave behind. Learn how to read animal tracks and discover what other signs animals leave behind and what they tell us about those animals! Investigate real animal specimens, hike the trails in search of clues and create your own track to take home!

No School Day Camp: Creatures of the Night, Grades 1-5 *FULL*

As you are fast asleep at night what kind of animals are scurrying about wide awake? Come out and learn all about these nocturnal species and their amazing adaptations that help them survive the PNW dark nights. Look at owl specimens, play games using echolocation and make crafts that focus on our nocturnal friends. If you’ve ever wondered what happens in nature while you are asleep then this is the camp for you!

No School Day Camp – Fun Fridays: Autumn Trails – Hike & Learn, Grades 3-6 *FULL*

On this Junior trekking camp we will go to Tillamook State Forest and hike one of their amazing medium-grade trails as we learn to interact with nature in a sustainable way, leaving no trace behind and practicing the 10-essentials to outdoor survival. This camp is for students in grades 4-6.

Have you ever thought about what it takes to survive in the winter? Band together with your fellow campers to learn the ins and outs of wilderness survival. We are going crafty, very crafty! On this camp we will recreate art with natural materials found in our Forests, we will engage all of our sense and reimagine a world where humans and nature coexist in harmony and peace. This is where ecology and the arts meet to make a better world for all.

November Break Day Camp – Our Nocturnal Neighbors, Grades 3-6 *FULL*

Spend the day at our Sanctuary learning about the animals that awake when we go to sleep. Investigate owl and bat specimens to learn about the similarities and differences between the two. We will conduct experiments with our own eyes to see human adaptations for seeing at night and then go out in search of some of these creatures in our forest sanctuary!

November Break Day Camp – The Art of Invisibility, Grades 1-3 *FULL*

Let’s head into our sanctuary to practice our stealth and hiding skills. We will learn what type of movements allow us to travel undetected through the woods, how we can learn from animals to better camouflage ourselves and hone our observation skills. Spend the day hiking the trails, camouflaging into the forest and investigating animals that live right here in our forest!

Discover your creative side in this one day camp using materials from nature. We will hike the trails finding inspiration and materials like rocks, sticks, fallen leaves and invasive weeds that will turn into creative arts and crafts projects. This is where nature and crafts meet in artsy ways!

Hibernation and torpor are ways that our Pacific Northwest birds and mammals endure the winter months! Let’s find out how they do it as we explore pelts and skulls from these amazing survivors. Out in the forest, we can also look for some of their hide outs and signs of their presence like paw prints and scat. Come join us on this exploration day!

Watercolor Painting In-Person Class with Ronna: The Bald Eagle

Join us for an in-person class with Ronna Fujisawa, an experienced watercolor painter, art educator, and bird enthusiast. This class is appropriate for intermediate and ambitious beginners. The great and mighty Bald Eagle can be seen quite often around Portland and is a conservation success story. It’s always really exciting to spot one of these large and majestic birds of prey. This in person class will focus on creating contrast, feather patterns, and watercolor wash backgrounds. Come join Ronna to learn how to paint this incredible bird in detail with watercolor!

Spring Break Camp: Waking up from Winter, Grades 2-3 *FULL*

Come learn about all the small animals that inhabit our Sanctuary forest as they awake from their winter hibernation. We will tell animal tales and play games inspired by what you learn! We’ll be sure to spend plenty of time searching the forest for bushy squirrel tails, slippery newt tails and glossy amphibian eggs to find out who’s waking from a sleepy winter.

Spring Break Camp: Nature Mosaics, Grades K-1 *FULL*

Come get creative on this hands-on camp and experience the joy of creating mosiacs inspired by nature.
We will forage the land for materials like sticks, leaves, mosses and rocks to create our one of a kind mosiac. Hike the trails to gain inspiration and let your creativity run wild in this art-inspired camp.

Spring Break Camp: Watershed Wanderers, Grades 3-6

Go out and explore the big and small watersheds in the vicinity of Forest Park. Travel to Cedar Mill Falls, collect water samples, learn about what a watershed is and how they are interconnected to all the nature that surrounds us. Conduct science experiments to see if the creek is healthy and learn about things that humans can do to preserve the watersheds we live in!

From birdsong, to the wind, to the sounds of Balch Creek –  experience the cacophony of sound that can be found in a forest on this sensory-filled camp. Learn how to interpret the sounds you are hearing and what you can learn from the forest by taking a moment to listen!

What tales have our ancient Pacific Northwest forest heard and what stories do our century-old growth trees know? Immerse yourself in the giant trees of the forest, that exist right here in our city to find out what stories they tell. Learn how to identify some of our most common plants and animals in our Nature Sanctuary and create your own stories about them!

Spring Break Camp: Salmon Run, Grades 3-6

Oregon’s Salmon run depends on the vitality of hundreds of water springs in the Gorge that trickle to the Columbia River. We will hike up to waterfalls to learn about the habitats and geology that support salmon and visit a fish hatchery with thousands of fish ready to start their journey to the sea. Come learn about the ecology, geology and cultural significance of the Columbia River on this exciting search for wildlife!

Spring Break Camp: The Colors of Spring, Grades 2-3 *FULL*

We will form a deeper understanding of nature by exploring different ways of observing and experiencing the natural world that surrounds us. We will sketch shapes that come to life near the creek and create projects inspired by the forest and all of the amazing things that we observe. Spring is the perfect time to draw inspiration from nature’s colors – from blooming flowers and native plants to colorful songbirds returning from their winter homes, so come on out and create the day away!

Spring Break Camp: Miniature Bug Hideouts, Grades K-1 *FULL*

They range from microscopic to bigger than your hand and science estimates that there are millions of species on the planet! Insects and their arachnid cousins can be bizarre, funny looking, beautiful but also powerful. This camp is all about learning the basic science behind what makes bugs one of the greatest evolutionary successes in nature! Head out into the forest with your magnifying glass in hand to seek out some of these tiny inhabitants that call our Sanctuary home.

Spring Break Camp: Wilderness Survival 101, Grades 3-6

Band together with fellow campers to learn the ins and outs of wilderness survival while we hike around local trails. Throughout the day you will discover the answers to all your survival questions. Things like: Where might you find water when needed and how could you make sure it is safe to drink? How to can you navigate the trails to ensure you don’t get lost? What are items that are essential for survival? These important skills will help build outdoor confidence all while having fun and making new friends!

Portland is home to some of the most forested habitat in a city in our country! Come out and learn about why having forests in our cities is so important to wildlife, plant life and human life. Spring Break Camp: Predators on the Prowl, Grades 2-3 *FULL*

Apex predators are those at the top of food chains like Wolves, Cougars, Orcas and Eagles. They are magnificent in size, fierce and armed with lethal hunting skills, yet they are vulnerable and depend on healthy ecosystems to survive. Join us in learning about apex predators’ unique adaptations through the study of real skulls and pelts. Search the forest to look for signs on the trail that would tell you if these animals have visited our Sanctuary.”
