The New School of Birding, Module 3: The Wonders of Migration

Join Candace and Dan to learn about the wonders of bird migration through digital classes and field days! In this module, we hope to raise your awareness of the subtle cues of nature, and bring you into closer understanding of the lives of our feathered neighbors. We’ll explore how and why birds migrate, delving into the mysteries of how birds stay on course, how scientists measure migration, the amazing journeys of long-distance migrants, and much more. Along the way, we’ll practice our birding skills in the field, with a focus on the diversity and abundance of spring migrants in our region.

Botany for Birders: An Introduction with Ryan Gilpin

Join local arborist, ecologist and birder Ryan Gilpin on a series of classes designed to help birders explore the plant world. Every month, Ryan will focus on a particular characteristic of trees (such as leaves or bark) and use that character to understand more about the plant. Through coupled classroom and field sessions Ryan will help you increase your ability to describe that plant and connect to the natural world around you.

Deep Birding through the Seasons: Spring Approaches with Dan van den Broek and Candace Larson *FULL*

Join Dan and Candace as we use a slower approach to connecting with nature with a focus on understanding birds. From March through July, we’ll dive deep into our senses, focusing on awareness and intention, careful observation, inspired field journaling and basic illustration and mindfulness. Module 1, Spring Approaches, will focus on the changing season, how birds are using the landscape, and an introduction to bird language.
